Byetta

Byetta Use May Lead to Acute Pancreatitis - Our Attorneys Can Help

Type 2 diabetes patients have been prescribed Byetta, which technically is known as exenatide. Reports have linked Byetta to serious side effects, including the following:

  • The onset of acute pancreatitis (a sudden inflammation of the pancreas)
  • Hemorrhagic and necrotizing pancreatitis
  • Kidney failure

These injuries can be severe and long-term. The use of Byetta and some other prescription drugs, such as Reglan, have been linked to deaths, which could create potential wrongful death lawsuits.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in October 2007 notified healthcare providers that the agency had received reports of at least 30 cases of acute pancreatitis associated with Byetta. The FDA issued a second alert in August 2008 notifying healthcare providers of six reported cases of hemorrhagic and necrotizing pancreatitis, which had resulted in at least two deaths.

FDA Receives Reports of Kidney Problems Linked to Byetta

Between April 2005, when Byetta was introduced to the market, and October 2008, the FDA received 78 reports of problems with kidney function in patients using Byetta. Some cases occurred in patients with pre-existing kidney disease or in patients with one or more risk factors for developing kidney problems.

Nearly 7 million prescriptions for Byetta were dispensed between April 2005 and September 2008. The FDA worked with the manufacturer of Byetta, Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Inc., to update the drug's label with stronger warnings.
