Take Motorcycle Safety Precautions To Prevent Severe Injury Accidents

Motorcyclists are perhaps the most vulnerable operators on the roads, whether riding in Pennsylvania, New Jersey or elsewhere. With only inches between them and the pavement, bikers must take the appropriate safety precautions to reduce the risk of injuries. If you are in an accident, you should understand what to do afterward to keep yourself and other safe.

The following are some tips to reduce your risk of accidents and injuries:

  • Wear a helmet. Helmets save lives. They can help prevent serious traumatic brain injury if you are in a motorcycle accident and hurt your head. Unhelmeted riders are three times more likely to die from injuries than riders who wear helmets, no matter what the speed.
  • Wear the right attire. Leather pants, coats and gloves all protect your skin should you get in an accident. Leather works like a second skin to protect you from road rash and the elements. Also important are goggles and face protection to reduce the risk of blindness.
  • Check your tire pressure. Adequate tire pressure allows riders to safely and easily take turns and corners.
  • Inspect your bike. Look for any visible damages, including loose bolts. A quick inspection could save your life.

How Motorcycle Safety Precautions Can Save Your Life

Studies have shown that motorcyclists are 27 times more likely to die in a collision than the occupants of the other vehicle. Motorcyclists are five times more likely to sustain some injury than are the passengers in the other vehicle. Taking proper safety precautions may reduce your risk of injury or death.

Pennsylvania and New Jersey Helmet Law

Any person in Pennsylvania who operates or rides a motorcycle must wear a helmet unless he or she is 21 years of age or older and has been licensed to operate a motorcycle for at least two years or has completed a motorcycle safety course approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation or the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. Anyone operating a motorcycle on a learner's permit must wear a helmet regardless of age.

In New Jersey, all motorcycle riders are required to wear a helmet.
