A top reason for accidents is distracted driving, particularly by texting truckers. When truckers and bus drivers are sending or receiving text messages behind the wheel, it's not only dangerous, it's illegal.
In January 2010, the federal government formally barred bus drivers and truckers from sending text messages while behind the wheel. The legislation is part of a growing effort to make laws to eliminate the threat of distracted drivers.
It's not clear how many truck accidents, car wrecks and motorcycle accidents have occurred as a result of truckers texting behind the wheel, but such activities certainly create a high risk for accidents.
Truckers who send or receive text messages are 23 times as likely as their non-texting counterparts to be involved in a crash or near miss, according to an analysis by Virginia Tech's Transportation Institute. Researchers examined commercial trucking data from 2004 to 2007 that involved 203 truckers and 3 million miles of driving. Other studies have compared the risks of texting while driving to operating under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
